Maternity leave
Also known as: إجازة الوضع · إجازة الأمومة · maternity leave Saudi Arabia
Maternity leave is a female worker’s right on giving birth. Since the Saudi Labour Law amendments that took effect in February 2025, Article 151 sets it at twelve weeks on full pay; how it is split before and after the birth, and when it can be extended, is set by the law and its Implementing Regulations.
What it means for HR
- Update your leave policy if it still says ten weeks, the period before the amendment.
- A worker may not be dismissed or warned of dismissal during pregnancy or maternity leave, or during a certified illness arising from either, up to 180 days a year (Article 155).
- Article 87 keeps the full end-of-service award for a worker who ends her contract within three months of giving birth.
The six weeks after the birth are compulsory, up to four weeks may be taken before the expected date, and the leave can be extended without pay. Check the detailed conditions in the official text before applying them.
